Mr. Mathias Bak, Associate MACN Denmark, conducted a training session at Maritime Academy of Pakistan. He gave his presentation to more than 200 trainee marine officers and other participants. Mr. Bak introduced MACN, which represents 190+ maritime companies (mostly shipping lines) with a goal of ensuring a corruption-free industry that operates efficiently and safely. He clarified the key terms being used including corruption as the “misuse of power for personal gain”, and integrity as “doing what’s right and doing it in the right way”. The employers value integrity, making it a valuable skill. Corruption in the maritime industry threatens seafarers’ rights and erodes trust in the institutions. However, when united, individuals can combat corruption effectively. He discussed various risks in the industry, including bribery, where individuals obtain advantages through money or other payments.
