Advancing through Collective Action towards good governance in the Maritime Industry of Pakistan

Global Compact Network Pakistan & Maritime Anti-Corruption Network

About MACN

MACN is a global business network working towards the vision of a maritime industry free of corruption that enables fair trade to the benefit of society at large. Established in 2011 by a small group of committed maritime companies, MACN has grown to include over 200 shipping and other companies carrying 50% of the load in tonnage globally and has become one of the pre-eminent examples of collective action to tackle corruption.
MACN and its members work towards the elimination of all forms of maritime corruption by raising awareness of the challenges faced; implementing the MACN Anti-Corruption Principles and co-developing and sharing best practices; collaborating with governments, non-governmental organizations, and civil society to identify and mitigate the root causes of corruption; and creating a culture of integrity within the maritime community.

MACN & GCNP

The Global Compact Network Pakistan (GCNP) is the local country network representing the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) in Pakistan in terms of promoting sustainable business practices. UNGC is the world’s largest initiative for corporate sustainability. GCNP encourages companies to follow the UNGC’s Ten Principles, which cover human rights, fair labor practices, environmental protection, and anti-corruption. Serving as a platform for dialogue and collaboration, GCNP brings together businesses, civil society, government, and other stakeholders to share ideas and best practices in sustainability, helping companies integrate these principles into their daily operations.

GCNP provides training, resources, and tools to support members in adopting sustainable practices and aligning with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It organizes events, workshops, and seminars to raise awareness and foster involvement in sustainability initiatives. Through these efforts, GCNP aims to build a culture of transparency, ethical behavior, and accountability among Pakistani businesses, contributing to a more inclusive, sustainable economy and aligning local companies with global standards.

COLLECTIVE ACTION PROJECT IN PAKISTAN

Since September 2021, the MACN has partnered with GCNP to tackle corruption in Pakistan’s maritime industry through a Collective Action approach. This collaboration brings together key stakeholders of maritime industry, including government bodies, port authorities, private companies, and trade associations, to foster transparency, integrity, and ethical practices in maritime operations. Their joint initiatives include training sessions, workshops, and awareness campaigns to educate businesses and officials on anti-corruption laws and ethical business practices, while also providing tools and resources to improve compliance standards and reduce the risk of bribery.

The partnership also aims to strengthen public-private cooperation by encouraging companies to adopt zero-tolerance policies against corruption and fostering a culture of integrity within the industry. By promoting international standards and best practices, MACN and GCNP are working to create a more accountable, efficient, and fair maritime industry in Pakistan
